The table position in poker

In general, when we talk about the position at the poker table, we refer at our position in reference with the button (the dealer). In my opinion, this is the first thing that a poker player should learn.
Therefore, we have four general positions at the poker table:

1-Blinds – the first and the second position after the dealer; these are the positions that will act first consecutively after the flop, the small blind SB and the big blind BB that will always be twice the small blind.

2- The early position – it refers to the next 3 positions after the blinds (more exactly, positions 3-4-5 after the dealer). This is the most dangerous position at the table and only the best hands should be played in this position, high pairs like the popes or aces; it is a great position for attacking the pot or for bluffing. The first position after the blinds, position 3 after the dealer, is known as UTG (under the gun) and I recommend (as many pro players ) to play only the strongest hands (and when I say that, I refer at a big pair and the AK hands) and to never call this position, but only raise.

3-The middle position- it refers to the following 3 positions in reference with the early position, meaning positions 6-7-8 after the dealer… when you are on this position you can play medium valued hands due to the fact that you have an advantage towards the 5 players that act before you and you will also have information on the hand they have.

4- The late position – it refers to the last position at the table, position 9 and the dealer position. These two positions are considered to be the best positions at the table that allow the player to play weak hands and to attack the pot for stealing it or before the flop to attack the blinds with the same purpose. You will find in some materials that the position before the dealer is also known as the cut-off position of the boss position due to the fact that this position has the possibility to attack the dealer, which is of course, the best position at the table.
It is very important to know which your position at the table is in order to choose what hands to play because as there are more players after you, the possibility for them to have a better hand than yours increases.
