Calculating pot odds

Calculating pot odds at poker game might seem pretty difficult at first. Although no one can say pot odds are simple to be calculated and to be understood, there is a schematic solution that can be applied by every poker player to find the process easier.

Calculating the odds can be simpler, if you take into consideration the fact that each hand falls in one of three categories before the flop.

If you have a dead hand, then the chances to win the pot are very low so the solutions are to check and fold or to bluff as winning is almost impossible usually.

The second situation is having a strong hand, when betting or raising are the best strategies. However, keep in mind that the odds for you to win the pot depend on the table cards as well. If you sense that your opponents can easily get a strong hand with the table cards then reconsider your decision.

The third situation is more difficult as it refers to a “drawing hand”, when waiting for the cards on the table decides how strong your hand will be.

When you expect for a card to create a strong hand, think about the possibility for that card to occur. Keep in mind the number of the opponents, the cards you already have and the table cards and you have all the chances to calculate the pot odds properly.
